(WNY News Now) – Jamestown, NY – WNY News Now recently interviewed Sukanya Burman Dance, a local dance company, to discuss the upcoming Jamestown Dance Festival and Sukanya Burman’s induction into the Hue Arts NYS Cohort.

Sukanya Burman and Daryl Simons Jr., owners of Sukanya Burman Dance, a local dance company, sat down with WNY News Now to discuss the upcoming Jamestown Dance Festival that they are organizing in collaboration with the Reg Lenna, which will see a plethora of events and performances from several different dance companies throughout the state.

The festival, set to take place from September 7th through the 9th, will see full-length 60 minute performances from two New York City based companies: Barkha Dance Company and Soles of Duende. Biodance, a dance company based out of Rochester, is also set to take the stage, as well as Sukanya Burman Dance themselves.

The performances will be split between two days, with Barkha Dance Company and Biodance performing on the 7th, while Soles of Duende, Sandip Mallick, an international performer, and Sukanya Burman Dance will perform on the 8th, with the latter being joined by regional dancers as well as dancers hailing from Syracuse. The performances will take place at the Reg Lenna.

In addition to the live performances, film screenings will commence at the Robert H. Jackson Center on Saturday, which will be followed by a discussion panel, as well as workshops that will take place on all three days of the festival.

The festival has been supported by the New York State Dance Force, a partner of NYSCA (New York State Council on the Arts), as well as the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, the Sheldon Foundation, the Yellen Foundation, and the Reg Lenna, among others.

Tickets to the festival are currently available, with a focus on accessibility and affordability. Sukanya Burman Dance has partnered with the National Comedy Center, with a 25% discount on admission into the museum with the purchase of festival tickets. Additionally, those who purchase tickets to see Lewis Black’s “Goodbye Yeller Brick Road” at the Reg Lenna on September 6th will receive a discount on festival tickets. The current earlybird price for both days is $54, which will allow purchasers the opportunity to view performances from all featured dance companies. This comes at a remarkable discount, as tickets to see a single performance by Soles of Duende at the Joyce Theater in New York City cost $75.

Another significant milestone for the company is Sukanya Burman’s induction into the HueArts NYS Cohort. HueArts, an organization focusing on BIPOC representation in the arts community, realized the immense underrepresentation throughout the state and selected Sukanya Burman Dance as one of the first ten organizations selected for its leadership cohort, with the aim of bringing more resources to underserved organizations and allowing for greater collaboration within the community.

This comes as a significant achievement for the fledgling nonprofit, who only incorporated in 2023, demonstrating how far they have managed to come in such a short period of time. The success has been exhilarating yet also daunting, but they remain eternally grateful for all of the support they have received from the community, other organizations, the state, and beyond that has allowed them to make it this far.

Sukanya Burman Dance remains committed in shedding light on the immense talent that has long been overlooked within the community and the region, and we look forward to seeing what the future has in store for them.
