(WNY News Now) – ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two Rochester residents, Louis P. Ferrari, II, 42, and Dominic Sprague, 40, have been sentenced to three years’ probation, including 10 months of home detention, for their roles in an illegal sports betting ring. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced the sentencing, which also involved significant financial forfeitures—$150,000 from Ferrari and approximately $92,000 from Sprague.
The case, handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Meghan K. McGuire and Melissa M. Marangola, revealed that between April 2019 and April 2021, Ferrari and Sprague conspired with several others to operate an illegal bookmaking business with a daily revenue of around $2,000. The operation utilized the website sport700.com to manage and place bets on various sports events.
Ferrari and Sprague, along with other co-defendants, facilitated betting transactions through cash collections and online payment platforms such as CashApp, PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle. Their activities included creating accounts, managing wagers, and distributing winnings, making the operation both complex and far-reaching.
The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations and supported by multiple law enforcement agencies, underscores the growing challenges of combating illegal gambling in the digital age.
