(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, NY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Allegany County, effective from January 2 at 3:16 AM EST until January 5 at 6:00 PM EST. Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for challenging conditions as a lake effect snow event is expected to bring significant accumulations and gusty winds.

Snow and Wind to Create Treacherous Conditions

The advisory warns of additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, especially in the higher terrain of western Allegany County. Accompanying winds could gust up to 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow that will severely reduce visibility.

The hazardous weather is projected to impact Thursday’s morning and evening commutes, with snow-covered roads and poor visibility posing risks to drivers.

Rapid Weather Changes Likely

The NWS cautions that lake effect snow often occurs in narrow bands, leading to abrupt shifts in weather conditions over short distances. Travelers should anticipate fluctuating visibility and road conditions, with some areas experiencing heavy snow while others remain relatively clear.

Safety Instructions

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and plan accordingly if travel is necessary. The NWS recommends submitting snow reports through their website or social media channels to assist with ongoing weather monitoring efforts.

Key Safety Tips:

  • Monitor local news and weather updates for the latest information.
  • Ensure vehicles are equipped for winter travel, including snow tires or chains.
  • Carry emergency supplies such as blankets, water, and flashlights when traveling.
