(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 74-year-old Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection to a fatal stabbing that occurred in 2018.

Jamal Fareed entered the guilty plea on Monday before Erie County Court Judge James Bargnesi to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony. The plea fully satisfies the indictment against him.
The case dates back to November 13, 2018, when Buffalo Police responded to an apartment building on the 900 block of Main Street around 2:00 p.m. Officers discovered the body of 66-year-old Ray Thompson inside his apartment. An autopsy determined that Thompson died from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma.
Fareed was arraigned on the indictment in September 2019 but was deemed not competent to stand trial. He remained in a secure mental health facility until June 2024, when he was found fit to proceed. Following two forensic examinations, he was declared competent in August 2024, and a jury trial was scheduled for March 2025.
Fareed now faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced on April 29, 2025. He remains held without bail.
Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane commended retired Buffalo Police Detectives Carl Lundin and James Kaska for their investigative efforts. The case was prosecuted by Chief Cathleen M. Roemer, Assistant District Attorneys Christine M. Garvey and Briana R.D. Kalman, and Homicide Bureau Chief Eugene T. Partridge III.
