(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Cold Weather Advisory effective from February 17 at 10:00 p.m. EST until February 18 at 10:00 a.m. EST for multiple counties in western and central New York. A Wind Advisory is also in effect until 6 p.m. EST on February 17.

Hazardous Conditions Expected

Residents in Erie, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties should prepare for strong winds and dangerously cold wind chills.

  • Winds: Sustained west winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph.
  • Wind Chills: Temperatures could feel as low as 20 to 25 below zero, creating hazardous conditions for exposed skin.

Potential Impacts

  • Gusty winds may cause unsecured objects to be blown around, potentially leading to downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.
  • Extreme cold temperatures pose a risk of frostbite within 30 minutes of exposure to unprotected skin.

Safety Precautions

  • If venturing outside, dress in layers and cover all exposed skin to reduce the risk of frostbite.
  • Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should use caution.
  • Secure outdoor objects to prevent wind damage.
