(WNY News Now) – OLEAN, N.Y. — September 23, 2025 — The City of Olean Water Division is continuing its efforts to identify and remove potential lead service lines as part of the nationwide “Get the Lead Out” program. From September 23 through September 25, Water Division staff will conduct door-to-door visits across the city.

Officials say employees will be clearly identified with official badges and City of Olean gear. During each visit, staff will request access to inspect the service line material at the water meter inside homes. The inspection process is quick, typically taking less than five minutes.

City leaders stress the importance of resident cooperation. The inspections are non-invasive, and participation will help ensure Olean’s water system remains safe and compliant. Allowing staff to check service lines also prevents the need for exploratory digging or potholing to identify unknown water service lines.

“This initiative is essential to protect drinking water and maintain public health,” city officials noted, emphasizing that Olean is part of a larger national effort to eliminate lead exposure through outdated service lines.

Residents with questions or those wishing to schedule a visit can contact the Water Division at (716) 376-5657.
