(WNY News Now) – LOCKPORT, N.Y. — A Niagara Falls man will spend the next 19 years in state prison after pleading guilty to a violent assault that left a gas station cashier seriously injured, according to the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office.

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced that Darrion A. Cotton, 59, was sentenced following his guilty plea to Assault in the First Degree. The conviction stems from a January 19, 2024, robbery in Niagara Falls during which Cotton admitted to striking a cashier in the head with a hammer.

Authorities said the victim sustained serious injuries in what prosecutors described as a brutal attack.

Seaman credited the Niagara Falls Police Department for identifying and apprehending the suspect. In a statement, he noted Cotton’s criminal history, which includes three prior felony convictions and three previous state prison sentences.

“This sentence will protect the community from this dangerous and violent individual,” Seaman said.

The sentence was imposed by Acting Supreme Court Justice Mario Giacobbe.

The case was investigated by the Niagara Falls Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Derek Hafner and Richelle Kloch-Krantz.
